Why More Australians Are Making a Doula Career Change?
Career changes are rarely random. For most people who transition into doula work with Doula Beginnings, the decision follows a moment that stays with them: witnessing a loved one’s birth, navigating a return to work that no longer feels aligned or seeking meaningful, flexible self employment.
Doula work is one of the few fields where a background in corporate administration, marketing, retail, healthcare, hospitality or full time parenting is a direct asset. The life experience, empathy and communication skills you already have are often exactly what make you a steady, grounded presence in the birth room. Carolyn Tranter has trained doulas from every kind of professional background, and the common thread is never the resume, it is the commitment to show up fully for growing families.
Do You Need Experience to Become a Doula?
No. Doula training has no experience prerequisites and you do not need to have a nursing degree, clinical background or a prior healthcare role.
A doula’s role is strictly non clinical. Doulas do not perform medical exams, deliver babies or administer medication. Instead, they provide continuous emotional advocacy, physiological comfort measures and postpartum recovery support.
Our birth, postpartum doula and combined training for beginners is structured to take someone with zero birth or postpartum industry experience and give them the foundational competencies, ethical clarity and practical skills needed to practice safely and confidently within scope. Our training is the only DONA Approved training available in Oceania
Who Makes a Great Doula? Common Career Backgrounds
Healthcare and allied health professionals
Nurses, midwives and physiotherapists bring valuable clinical literacy into their doula practice, though they still need to shift from clinical management into the continuous, non clinical space. Doula training helps healthcare professionals translate their existing knowledge into the emotional and continuous support role a doula plays.
Yoga teachers and birth educators
Yoga teachers, childbirth educators and antenatal practitioners already understand the body, breath and the emotional terrain of pregnancy. A doula training workshop builds directly on this foundation, adding hands on labour comfort techniques, partner support strategies and birth advocacy skills.
Those with personal birth or parenting experience
Many trainees arrive because their own birth and postpartum experience, whether empowering or difficult, changed how they see the process. Personal birth experience is not a requirement, but for many it is the spark that starts the search for Doula training.
What Will You Learn in Birth & Postpartum Doula Training?
Doula Beginnings training covers pregnancy, labour, birth and the fourth trimester.
Skills, knowledge and hands-on techniques

Training includes hands on comfort measures such as acupressure, positioning techniques and partner support strategies, plus continuous labour care across hospital, birth centre and home birth settings. For those training in postpartum care, the curriculum also covers infant feeding guidance, newborn care and the physical and emotional recovery of the fourth trimester.
Heart-centred approach to doula practice
Technical skill is only part of the picture. Carolyn’s training is built around a heart-centred approach: active listening, advocacy without overstepping, and maintaining a calm, grounded presence during some of the most vulnerable moments a family will experience.
The Business Side: Building Your Doula Practice
Business templates, Client Agreements and pricing structures
A career change is only sustainable if it can actually support you financially. That is why Doula Beginnings training includes discussion on developing business templates, client agreements and pricing structures so your first client conversation feels professional from day one, not improvised.
Mentorship, community and ongoing professional development
Every Doula Beginnings workshop purchase includes twelve months of Doula Beginnings membership which includes ongoing mentorship. That means monthly masterclasses, access to a private member community and a direct line to Carolyn Tranter as you take on your first clients. Carolyn built this level of support because she trained as the first certified doula in New Zealand with no community and no one to call and she has spent the years since making sure her own graduates never have to figure it out alone.
