Standards of Practice

Scope of Practice
  • Provide physical, emotional, and informational support to clients during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.
  • Assist clients in developing birth and postpartum plans that align with their values and preferences.
  • Offer referrals to appropriate healthcare providers and community resources as needed.
Training and Certification
  • Complete a comprehensive doula training program that includes education in birth and postpartum support, ethics, and professional standards.
  • Stay current with continuing education requirements and certifications as required by Doula Beginnings and other professional organizations.
Collaboration with Healthcare Providers
  • Foster positive and respectful relationships with medical professionals, midwives, and other birth workers to ensure integrated care for clients.
  • Communicate professionally and collaboratively within the healthcare team while maintaining the role of a non-medical support professional.
Business and Professionalism
  • Conduct all business dealings with transparency, honesty, and integrity.
  • Adhere to fair pricing structures and clearly communicate service agreements, fees, and policies.
  • Maintain accurate and secure records of client interactions in accordance with ethical and legal guidelines.
Advocacy and Community Engagement
  • Advocate for respectful, evidence-based, and client-centered care within the birth and parenting community.
  • Support efforts to increase public awareness of the value and role of doulas in maternal and infant health.
  • Engage in community outreach and education to expand access to doula services for diverse and underserved populations.
